Singing, the art of performing songs or tunes by making musical sounds with the voice has been a part of mankind throughout the recorded human history. There have been many great singers from all parts of the world. Elvis Presley, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Michael Jackson, Mehdi Hasan, Lata Mangeshkar, and Madam Noor Jahan are some of the notable artists to name a few! Modern singers like John Legend, Myles Kennedy, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Jacob Collier, Adele, and many more are some good examples of the beauty of 'Singing'.
However, for those who are starting out and aspiring to become the next virtuoso or maybe just for fun but don't have any guidance on 'how to start singing?', they don't know how and what to practice? Well, I have perfect guidance for you to follow along and get on track to learn to sing! I invited my very good friend and bandmate, Ifraeem Yousaf who is a very talented and seasoned vocalist in the Indian Classical territory of music, to my weekly podcast series called "Musician Talk with Daniel Sohail" to tell us and give some tips on singing and how to practice it and get started in 2021? Isn't that awesome?
Here are some tips for you guys from Ifraeem:
1. Define and choose your path
A very understood but important point is to 'define and choose your path'. In other words, you should know your goals with singing because music is like ocean, it doesn't have any limits or ends to it! To make this simple and easy to understand is that there are several styles/genres of music. Each one of those are unique and different from each other and there are different techniques, styles etc involved in different genres so you have to choose a path. Ask yourself if you want to be a Pop singer or a Rock artist or maybe who knows you might want to be a Jazz vocalist! It's like you have to choose where you want to go before taking the steps! So, know your goal and choose your path!
2. Don't overdo a practice/exercise
As the famous quote/proverb says:
Excess of everything is bad!
Similarly, over-practicing a practice exercise is not a good thing to do because it can lead you to problems later! For more information about this, check out the video below to listen to the whole podcast about this in detail.
3. Don't Rush! Be Patient
Learning patience can be a difficult experience, but once conquered, you will find life is easier.
- Catherine Pulsifer
This is another very important tip for the newbies who are just starting out. Please don't rush, keep practicing with patience and you'll get there eventually. Don't try to think that if you practice all night you'll become the next MJ. Just be patient and keep practicing until you reach your goal, everything takes a little time.
4. Get yourself a professional teacher
If you are serious about this and want to pursue it, then get any professional teacher available to you (in your area). Teachers play an important role in guiding and developing all the techniques, boost up your efficiency and knowledge in a short time, you get someone who can professionally assist you as well and there are many more advantages attached to this single point. So, if you want to pursue singing seriously then go get yourself a professional teacher
5. Watch/Listen to the Podcast for some practices and exercises
As this is a very broad topic to cover and some stuff cannot be explained in textual form, you can watch the vocal exercises and practices Ifraeem told us on the podcast below:
